Anders Ståhl Trading was started in 1991. But experience in the footwear business began to be accumulated long before that.
From a spell in a shoe shop from 1984-87 to four years in the promised land of shoes, Spain, with a job at a footwear factory located in the Costa Blanca hinterland. And then back home to Sweden to start Anders Ståhl Trading. This operation kicked off working in close cooperation with classic CH Janson – a footwear and leather agency with roots going back to the 1940s. This cooperation was kept up until 2002, when AST merged CH Janson with their own operation.
CH Janson (taken over in 1978 by the brothers, Jörgen and Lars-Gunnar Ståhl) began to market Spanish footwear in 1982, successfully selling the Molt brand and their own Lipstick brand name. Lipstick attained its first real sales peak in 1990. By which time Anders Ståhl was part of this success, as the company's important link in Spain.
Over the years several major brand names have been sold by AST. Dr Martens days of glory from the early 90s are a milestone in operations history, as was the successful Shellys period of the late 90s. Along with these two British pioneers, Spanish shoes have always accounted for a significant proportion of sales.

Major successes were been harvested over the years with such brand names as Roobins and Strange. The AST range is now 100% Spanish, with a large proportion of the 2008 program filled by such brand names as SixtySeven, Penelope and KMB.
